Historic Schaffhausen

The nearby Rhine Falls and rapids forced boats and rafts to stop in Schaffhausen and transfer to carts. This allowed the town to become a thriving transshipment point. In the 16th century the citizens built a stronghold – the Munot. The Munot watchman continues to live in the tower to this very day and, as in centuries past, rings the “Glöggli” every evening at 9.
 

Historic old town

The extensive historic old town is almost entirely pedestrian and the numerous little boutiques, brand and designer stores and street cafés encourage visitors to enjoy a relaxeds troll around the shops.
 

Culture in Schaffhausen

Anyone in search of culture should visit the Romanesque Allerheiligen Abbey with an impressive museum celebrating the region's cultural heritage and an imposing 11th-century Romanesque pillar or one of the numerous events organised in a range of different locations.
