Campus Galli – Karolingische Klosterstadt Meßkirch

Campus Galli – the medieval construction site

Meßkirch, Germany

Visit the construction site! More than 1,200 years ago, monks on Reichenau Island drew up the perfect plan for a monastery. In addition to a large church, the plan also included craftsmen’s houses, stables and gardens to ensure the monastery was self-sufficient. After centuries gathering dust in the archives of the abbey library in St. Gallen, this plan is now being put into practice. It will be several decades until all the buildings shown on the plan for the monastery are finished. In the meantime, visitors have the opportunity to watch the craftsmen at work.
