The unique flora and fauna of the Rhine Delta are internationally recognized by the Ramsar Convention which oversees international wetlands.

This region is also an area protected under Natura 2000, whose mission it is to protect endangered wild plant and animal species.

More than 300 species of birds use the shallow water and silt areas for resting and feeding. The adjacent wet meadows, reeds and riparian forests provide good breeding grounds for rare and endangered species.
