Lake Dwelling Museum Unteruhldingen

Uhldingen-Mühlhofen, Germany

Sunken Stone Age Village Revealed

Welcome to the pile dwellings in Unteruhldingen, one of Europe’s largest and oldest open-air archaeological museums. The 23 reconstructions of pile dwellings from the Bronze and Stone Ages have made a fascinating, sunken world visible again for almost a century.

World heritage pile dwellings brought to life
Discover the ‘Pile Dwellings’ UNESCO World Heritage Site, walk along a footbridge on Lake Constance and admire the ancient techniques used in the Stone Age—the pile dwellings bring an ancient sunken world back to life. Twenty-three pile dwellings were reconstructed in an extensive museum complex in Unteruhldingen, a spectacular location on Lake Constance. Visitors can view a range of exciting Stone Age and Bronze Age artefacts in Germany’s oldest open-air archaeological museum.

Our new museum tour has been designed around our visitors: they avoid any form of contact with the exhibits and other people, and can easily follow the info points, sail flags and posters marking the route. The lake’s early history, the ‘Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps’ UNESCO World Heritage Site and Ötzi and his peers, their illnesses and medicines are the subjects of current presentations.

The Familien-Parcours (family tour) includes a stop at ‘Uhldi’s Stone Age kitchen’ (opening hours available on www.pfahlbauten.de).

The exhibition includes 1,000 original artefacts found at the UNESCO World Heritage Sites around Lake Constance. The museum, which was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Museumspreis (museum prize) for being family-friendly, is accessible to disabled people.

Tip:

The Steinzeit Parcours (Stone Age tour) is available in the holidays and includes lively and informative events about nutrition in the Stone Age.
