The monastic island of Reichenau – St. George with its original 10th century mural paintings is one of the best examples of late Carolingian Romanesque architecture built at the end of the 9th century. St. Mary and Mark Münster (cathedral) is the former church of the Benedictine Abbey Reichenau with origins in AD 724. The oldest features in today’s structure are the crossing and the eastern nave from AD 816. The 3rd church of St. Peter and Paul was consecrated by Bishop Egino of Verona in AD 799 with later Rococo additions.
