Mainau Island, the botanic garden in Lake Constance, offers nature experiences 365 days a year. The park with a palatial baroque ensemble dating back to the 18th century houses one of Germany´s largerst butterfly houses, a collection of over 150 year-old-trees - this is Mainau, the flower island with a Mediterranean character. Thousands upon thousands tulips, hundreds of rhododendrons, scented roses, perennials and colourful dahlias bloom in the park and gardens. Palms and citrus plants lend the island a Mediterranean flair in summer.
Bright colours and sweet scents
The most colourful of all seasons on Mainau is when the bulb flowers open. From March through May, you will discover a magnificent carpet of snowdrops, crocuses, daffodils, blue stars and tulips. From the end of May until the first frost, 12,000 rose plants adorn this Bodensee island, followed by dahlias in autumn. Imagine 12,000 sun-seeking tuber plants with 250 varieties and species along the island’s southern slopes in late summer and autumn.
Count's festivities
The highlights of the Mainau year include the annual Count's festivals. "Strolling, shopping, enjoying" is the motto at the Count's Island Festival and "Nobless Oblige" at the Count's Castle Festival.
Wander through and enjoy the wintry landscape of Mainau Island. Once you have explored the island, there are two attractions in particular you may want to visit: the Butterfly House and the Palm House. From 16 October 2020 to 7 February 2021, you can discover the winter exhibition „Remember your childhood as you rediscover the varied world of wooden toys“ at Mainau Palace. Also this year the palace court- yard is transformed into Scandinavian winter wonderland.
Nature, fun and variety for children are guaranteed at Mainau with one of the largest butterfly houses in Germany, the newly opened insect garden, the playgrounds "Waterworld," "Blumis Shoreline,” and “Dwarf Village,” as well as the treasure hunt.
